New Suffocation album is here!Suffocation is one of the few bands to start the "brutal death metal" sub-genre, in which I'm not the biggest fan of. Personally i prefer early 90's death metal due to the lack of pig sequels and constant banging of the snare drum. So when presented with this new offering from a brutal death act i start to feel skeptical, then the bias kicks in. Aside from my preconceptions about the album or the sub-genre i tried to review this with the most open mind possible....guess what, it worked! not only did i end up enjoying the album, i started to gain appreciation for the sub-genre as a whole. Anyways enough with the blabber so i can express how kick ass this album is!
1st thing to mention is that the quality of the album is pretty good, the instruments sound balanced out between the vocals and not drowned out (like in some brutal death metal offerings). The album also starts off with a nice opening song, Blood Oath, which at times is both brutal and melancholy. Some other good songs include Pray For Forgiveness (an instrumental version is included as well) , Come Hell or High Priest, and many others.
Blood Oath is a must have album for any fan of Brutal Death metal or just a Death Metal fan in general.
4/5
